Making Calls From Prison By Using Inmate Calling Cards

By Annette Rose

Inmate telephone systems have existed for a long time and they are maybe one of the few technical inventions which were not changed or improved throughout all this time, until nowadays. The inmate telephone systems were popular not only as a communication system used in jails but in many other institutions also. What is interesting is that even the mobile phones and their great success did not influence the usage of the so called inmate phone systems.

However, if you are a bit younger, you might have some problems understand what an inmate phone system is. Well, that is nothing more than connection between the telephones in institutions. Of course, calls with a third party could also be made.

Probably, you have already figured it out that there is nothing special or revolutionary about the inmate telephone systems. Basically, they are pretty much like the phone systems which are spread throughout a country. It is absolutely the same actually as the only difference is that the role of the "country" is played by the institution in the inmate phone systems. But perhaps, you are wondering how payment for the calls is made, aren't you? Well, that happens thanks to the inmate telephone calling cards. In fact, there are several types of calling phone cards available and each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages.

The first calling card, which is going to be discussed, is the prepaid one. The prepaid inmate telephone calling cards are basically the most spread and used way of making a call inside a jail. What prisoners do is paying for the card in advance, and once they get the card, it gives them allowance to use the phone for a particular amount of time or said in another way- they have a limit. Once the limit is reached, the prisoner will need to get a new prepaid calling card, which also costs money, of course.

Anyway, there are also debit phone calling cards which are used in some inmate telephone systems. The main difference from the previous calling cards which was mentioned above is that the phone call is paid after it finishes- it is not prepaid.

However, you may have thought they are only two kinds of inmate calling cards but there is just one more- these are the standard cards. Yes, they are really called "standard" and there is no doubt that they got the best possible name since there is really nothing special or surprising about them. Anyway, for any reasons this kind of calling cards are not that much used in prisons or institutions like that.

So, you already know that there are many types of inmate calling cards available- some of them are cheaper, and others- more expensive. Unfortunately, as they are used mainly in jails, prisoners do not have the right to choose which sort of cards to purchase. The reason is that the prison has just one of these three sorts of calling cards, which is allowed for usage and purchase. That is pretty logical since an inmate telephone system could never use all kinds of calling phone cards.

Well, that was pretty much everything which you need to know about the inmate telephone calling cards. Each of the types has got its own characteristics, advantages and disadvantages but usually the people who use them do not care so much about that since they do not have the opportunity to choose which one to use.
