Hunters, as any decent WoW player will tell you, are one of the the easier classes to level in the game. Their pets can be built into tanking machines, handling elites on their own while you sit behind the action doing loads of damage. But use the best hunter leveling spec, and you'll level faster than anyone else.
All hunter talents help you level, but focusing on Beast Mastery will have the best results. The BM tree gives you the best talents to equip a pet as a tank, allowing a hunter to sit back and deal lots of damage undeterred. In fact, with Beast Mastery alone, a Hunter's pet can become so powerful that your Hunter doesn't even need gear!
Here is one of the most highly recommended builds - Zygon's build - for leveling a hunter quickly, in order from your first talent point:
Start with the Beast Mastery Tree and put your first five points in Improved Aspect of the Hawk followed by:
2 points in Focused Fire
3 points in Endurance Training (3/5)
1 point in Aspect Mastery
2pts in Improved Revive Pet
1pt in Aspect Mastery
1 point in Intimidation
2 points in Bestial Discipline
5 points - Ferocity
5 points in Frenzy
2 points - Bestial Discipline
1 point - Animal Handler (1/2)
5pts in Frenzy
3 points - Ferocious Inspiration
1 point in The Beast Within
5pts in Serpent is Swiftness
1 point in Longevity
1 point - The Beast Within
2 (of 3) points - Cobra Strikes
Then change to the Marksmanship Tree, and put
1pt in Beast Mastery
Move to the Marksmanship Tree and put
5pts in Lethal Shots
3pts in Careful Aim
5pts in Mortal Shots
1pt in Go for the Throat
SURVIVAL TREE
5pts in Improved Tracking
For your minor glyphs, pick Feign Death, Mend Pet and Revive Pet.
The advantages to this build is how your pet is transformed into a monster, capable of tanking multiple monsters on its own. This build also gives the pet the capacity to hold aggro extremely well, allowing the hunter to deal damage without being harassed by mobs. This build only works when you're leveling up though. If you're after a build that's more focused on player vs player combat, then you might want to give this a go:
5 points in Improved Aspect of the Hawk
Start with 5 points into - Improved Aspect of the Hawk
followed by 2 points into - in Focused Fire
3pts in Endurance Training
1 point - Aspect Mastery
5 points - Unleashed Fury
2 points in Improved Mend Pet
1 point - Intimidation
2 points - Bestial Discipline
1 point - Improved Mend Pet (1/2)
5pts in Frenzy
1pt in Bestial Wrath
1 point - Animal Handler
1 point in Bestial Wrath
5 points in Serpent's Swiftness
1 point - The Beast Within
3 points - Cobra Strikes
1pt in Longevity
5 points in Kindred Spirits
1pt in Beast Mastery
Change to the Marksmanship Tree, and put
5 points - Lethal Shots
3pts in Focused Aim
3pts in Careful Aim
3pts in Improved Hunter's Mark
5 points - Mortal Shots
1 point -Aimed Shot
Pick Mend Pet, Feign Death and Revive Pet as your minor glyphs.
Both builds start off putting talent points into Aspect of the Hawk. While it does not benefit your pet in any way, the increased attack speed it gives your hunter is essential for doing decent damage.
Both build orders have a similar focus, although the second is more PvP orientated. They both start with Aspect of the Hawk, increasing your Hunter's attack speed. You can not explore the Beast Mastery tree without including the all-important Beast Mastery talent. Unleashed Fury, which adds a passive damage increase to your pet, is another essential talent as well. There's also Ferocity, which improves your pet's critical chance and is a must-have if you want to do any lasting damage to the more powerful mobs.
With both builds, you need to make sure you don't take aggro off your pet. The key is keeping your hunter away from mobs so he can deal damage safely. Let your pet take all of the damage from mobs and make sure you don't attract any to your hunter. Do that properly and you will be leveling up faster than you could imagine.
