How Much Space Do You Get To Make Sure You Have For Colocation?

By Bert Carr

If your business is expanding and you need a more secure place to store your hardware and equipment, it might be a good idea to consider colocation hosting. Hosting colocation is a good way to protect your hardware from theft, vandalism and fire. Co-location is placing an independent server on an Internet backbone to provide a constant high-speed connection from the internet to the sever. It can be termed as the provision of space that ensures a consumer's telecommunication equipments on the provider's premises. the servers are classified in different mental racks that was built to serve the purpose. Co-location is good for companies which need complete control over how their server is configured. If you are thinking about colocating, you need to know how much space you need.

Bandwidth

there is a misunderstanding among the general mass about the term bandwidth.Bandwidth is defined as the number of bits transmitted to a line. you can express band with Kbps, Mbps or, Gbps whatever you want. Most collocation providers offer a monthly usage level of co-location server to their clients. sometimes brustable bandwidths are offered by the other provides. Burstable bandwidth is not recommended for starters in the business because the security is not strong and there is a possibility that it will be compromised by hackers. If your connection is compromised by someone it can impose the burden of excessive use and overcharge. One of the biggest misconceptions people have with bandwidth is the more the better. This is far from the truth. To transfer a large amount of data in a regular basis or, if you got a large number of visitors in your server, then you need more bandwidth.

It is better to start with a 1 or 2 Mbps connection, and increase it gradually as needed.

Rackspace

Another type of space which you should think about is the rack space. If you compare this term with bandwidth then it can be expressed as the physical space needed for the server . Most of the time, business which decide to collocate and unaware of the rack space they will need. Rack space is also known as 1U. It means one rack unit. There are many things to consider when it comes to rack space and they are:

1. Number of the rack space used. 2. The space that VPN devices, Ethernet switch, KVM devices take to locate themselves. 3.Rack space used in the power management. 4. Keeping some rack space for the future use when the business will be an expanded one.

Other Equipment

Aside from rack space and the bandwidth, there are also other equipments which must be considered. At the same time you have to buy switches, routers, content filters, IPS, firewall devices to set up the total settings. It will be a deed of fool if you trust on the collocation company to take care of these matters. Always ask questions which will give you the answers. Do not assume anything or else you will make wrong decisions about collocation and this is something which you want to avoid as much as possible. Most co-location service providers have a technical staff which will work closely with you so that you can plan your network accordingly.
