Apple's iPad or Google Android: Which One Better?

By Sato Ichi

Which are best: iPad or Android tablets? What's the greatest difference between them, and which should you choose? We shall first chat about the Android and Apple software apps generally, and then discuss them apropos tablet computers, specifically the iPad 2 and the Android Honeycomb O. S utilized in the Dell streak 7 tablet.

The fundamental difference between the Apple and Android operating systems for tablet computers is that the Apple system is a closed system, specific only to apple devices, while Android is opensource. That suggests that Android is free for developers to use, both in terms of designing applications to run with it, and in the hardware using it as a platform.

A Common Platform

That's the background for Android, which is now being used in tablets in challenger to Apple's iPad. Because the iPad uses a proprietary software platform, it is by nature more highly constrictive than Android devices, and thus doesn't have the same breadth of communication between devices as Android tablets would in prinicple have. Nonetheless because Android tablets are in their infancy, this degree of platform commonality has yet to be used to any advantage.

In reality it is extremely likely that individual Android users will be protecting of control themselves, and that the full advantages of a standard platform are unlikely to be developed. However, due to this common platform, it is exceedingly likely in the future that apps and different types of software will tend to focus on Android instead of Apple. For the moment nonetheless , there's still a bigger selection of applications available for Apple devices than for Android tablets - but this is predicted to be only a non permanent situation because development of Android programs is now continual.

iPad 2 Vs Google Android Tablet

So how does all this transpose into the hardware using each one of the two operating systems? It is basically now a comparison of the iPad 2 with the top Android tablets. There are many capsules that fail to match iPad not to mention iPad 2, but there have been several good capsules developed using Android by top firms like Acer, Samsung and Motorola, and is the latter that we shall consider here.

The Dell Streak 7 Tablet uses the Android Honeycomb OS, and is thicker and heavier than the Apple's iPad (0.34 v 0.5 inches). Both have quad-core 1GHz processors, but the Streak has 1GB RAM against the 512MB believed to be offered by the iPad.

One wonderful feature of the Streak is that you can plug it into your Computer and access your files. You can transfer files or download from one the other. With the iPad 2 this is a ponderous process that has to be done through iTunes. No requirement you use iTunes to download music: you can easily download music to the Xoom tablet by drag and drop without requiring a great ponderous iTunes file to reside on your memory.

Multitasking Comparison

Another benefit of the Android tablet is it's true multitasking that the iPad is not. The iPad is more a case of changing between jobs, with a small amount of processing in the background, though not true multitasking. There are many other benefits that the Android tablets can offer over the iPad 2, including more suppleness in file handling, and icon presentation. You are not restricted to Apple formats because you can use any that utilises the Android open source software.
