I cannot recommend the carrying case that Amazon here recommends because there is no good place to store the power supply, except to force it in and begin wearing it down, but I am not dinging my rating here based on the case, just be forewarned about it! Whoops, I almost forgot to scream (in a bad way) at Amazon for how they ship this! I got this for web browsing at home and on the go. It is super-fast and the display is crisp and clear!
It runs my productivity software without a hitch, it doesn't slow down when I want to switch between multiple open programs, and it's quiet and has a great battery life. I purchased the netbook mostly based on reputation and because I already own a Toshiba laptop.
Windows 7 Live Mail is terrific and can meet all your email needs. I am a photographer and during the AK trip took tons of pictures, downloading them all onto the little Toshiba which didn't blink once. Battery lasts a long time, screen is just big enough to be useable, full keyboard is nice and the track pad beats my Lenovo. Word of advice for potential buyers, upgrade to 2 gigs of ram and uninstall just about everything that comes with it.
While I'll never be a Windows convert, this is a great little machine that lets me get my work done. I removed some of the Toshiba-ware, loaded Open Office and a free anti-virus program, and I am there. This is a great little gizmo, it's not for gamers. But it's perfect for surfing the web, email, Facebook and day to day stuff or travel to keep in touch.
I typically get a good 7-8 hours without plugging it in. Screen resolution is as good as any monitor or other laptop I've seen. You pick it up, and the rubberized matte finish feels good under your fingers -- like there's no way you're going to drop it unless you're a complete klutz. Also annoying is that the Windows 7 version it comes with idiotically does not let you choose a background. Hopefully Amazon will process a return. I saw nothing in Amazon's description which indicated that there are two models, but if you check Toshiba's site, you will see one model with a "(D3)" appended, and one without. You don't need it, but it is nice and didn't cost much at all. I have decided that when I need to replace my large notebook, I will definitely look at Toshiba first. Same goes for D2, the DDR2 model. The right shift key is about half the size it is on a normal laptop, which was kind of annoying at first, but I am getting used to it.
It looks and feels solid and doesn't leave finger smudges when you hold it which a lot of my friends complain about the iPad and other netbooks. I bought this for my wife and her travels for the summer.
For photo editing and tracking I installed the Canon Photo Stitch software that came with the camera. The Laptop even plays back my HD videos at full resolution with only a slight amount of pausing (glitching) in Windows media player. Kudos to Amazon as well for the very fast shipping and for the secure packaging. This is my first netbook and I have been impressed so far.
