Kenwood DNX6980 GPS Navigation System

By John J King

The Kenwood DNX6980 is an impressive in-dash GPS navigation unit. In this article we will be looking at some of the features that set it apart from other car GPS units.

With other GPS manufacturers charging a monthly or yearly fee for live traffic updates Kenwood definitely added value to this double din GPS navigation receiver by adding free NAVTEQ Live Traffic. No more frequent charges to you credit card, and no more getting stuck in traffic. With this useful service you'll be able to pinpoint traffic congestion and choose alternate routes.

This Kenwood GPS receiver unit has a beautiful high-resolution WVGA 6.95" touchscreen with Dynamic Brightness Control. Pop in your favorite movie DVD, connect your iPod to it and you're set.

The Kenwood DNX6980 has a built-in Parrot Bluetooth module, so use your Bluetooth-enabled phone to place or receive hands-free calls. No more fumbling for your cellphone when you're driving and you get a call. Just answer your call through the Kenwood DNX6980.

This receiver will pretty much play anything you throw at it. DVD, DVD-R/-RW, DVD+R/+RW, CD, CD-R/RW and MP3/WMA/AAC files on disc. Burn all your mp3s to a CD or DVD and you're ready to roll.

With portable hard drives being so inexpensive nowadays (many under $100), you can carry around your whole music collection on a cheap HD (and video collection for that matter) and plug it into your Kenwood DNX6980 through the USB input. It is unlikely that you'll be running out of material to watch or listen to anytime soon.

If your car has a built-in rear-view camera, or you installed an add-on, the Kenwood DNX6980 has an input for it. Just shift into reverse gear and your rear-view image will immediately appear on your receiver's screen. And since the screen can be divided in half you can see your rear-view camera image while you check info about your final destination.

If you've read any car GPS reviews you'll surely be familiar with Garmin. This receiver comes preloaded with Garmin GPS software. Garmin is one of the best GPS device manufacturers, as you surely know. It comes with built-in maps of the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico. Just one of the many features the Garmin GPS software includes in this device is Lane Assist with Junction View. With other GPS units you know an exit or junction is coming up, but are you sure you're in the right lane? With Lane Assist with Junction View you know exactly where you need to be to get on the next interchange.

As with any device that relies heavily on software there may be bugs that are identified after the product has hit the market. Be sure to visit Kenwood's website to download the latest firmware updates and Garmin map updates to make sure you get the most from the Kenwood DNX6980.
