Learn How Servers Work

By Jack Wogan

Servers are used mainly for file storage. They can be of various types and the main ones are the application servers, audio and video servers, chat and fax servers, FTP servers as well as mail servers.Servers are often dedicated, meaning that they perform no other tasks besides their server tasks. On multiprocessing operating systems, however, a single computer can execute several programs at once. A server in this case could refer to the program that is managing resources rather than the entire computer.

First of all, we have the web servers. This type of servers are specifically created for hosting websites and the software that facilitates visualization and operation on content. When you are building a website on the Internet, the most important thing is to decide which web host server to choose for hosting your website. There are various types of web servers, for example, virtual web hosting server, shared web hosting server, and dedicated server are the top three popular hosting services.

Apart from the web servers, there are also the application servers". The latter are designed to provide business logic or application delivery services. These servers are used to provide various services to the computer networks that access them. Their main role is that of a database. They can store the information of the whole company starting from address books through stock levels to sales records and many others.

Another type of servers are the thin servers. In the computer industry, a thin server is a PC that contains just enough hardware and software to support a particular function that users can share in a network, such as access to files on a storage device, access to CD-ROM drives, printing, or Internet access. According to the first companies who have used the term, a thin server can be quickly added to a network and costs less than providing the same service through a more general-purpose computer server.

The role of a computer server would be to support various applications. The best examples in this sense are the HP servers. HP has been a hardware provider in the technology market for more than sixty years developing a reputation for high quality by making a large investment into product research. Most importantly, they can facilitate communication between client and server machines.

All in all, investment in a server is a well-worth one, especially if you have to role of coordinating a major company. In this case, an HP server with sufficient RAM and hard disk space is going to ensure enough storage and it will keep safe all your data. A good idea is to run an intranet.
