A Few Features Offered In Standard Medical Records Software Packages

By Garfield I. Hintz

Medical records software are electronic medical records created in a hospital or physician's practice that allow medical professionals to access, store, retrieve, or modify them as needed. Because most medical records must be held by doctors for a minimum of seven years, having them located on an electronic system instead of hard copies in a filing cabinet, not only saves time and manpower, but a significant amount of physical space as well. The following are several additional software features and services that medical personnel can use to do this, and are useful pointers that help potential users to know what to search for when shopping.

Patient encounter software features display clinical information including productive time spent with patients, effective coding, billing, and other related information, all of which is under physician control and completely customizable. Users can generally access this type of feature from any computer or digital device that has internet access, so fire walls and other security protection should be updated frequently.

The physician dashboard is a feature that allows users the option to see office scheduling, medical personnel rosters, prescription requests, and access patient charts, all of which can be customizable. This convenient design gives medical staff a quick and simple way to see important information, and them avoid the stress and wasted time they would usually have rifling through filing cabinets searching for information.

Many medical records software packages also include a template library, where notes and other related information can be uploaded to the main dashboard section that provides a general overview of essential information. This saves time and increases the overall content quality of patient records.

An electronic prescription program is another time saving and convenient feature of most bundles, which permits medical professionals to set up and monitor automated prescriptions. It allows doctors to make up an electronic prescription slip, taking away the need to write up and send a traditional slip by the use of electronic medical records software. Refilling an existing prescription is also easy, and lets a patient skip the doctor's office and go directly to the pharmacy to pick up their approved refill, which the pharmacist can ask for through the automated system. Making the prescription process simpler not only improves medical staff efficiency, but also increases the likelihood that a patient will fill their prescriptions.

Even though each of these electronic medical records options is automatic they don't adversely affect communication with patients. Whenever a patient initiate's communication; a portal application sends it to the main dashboard, where it can be answered by a corresponding medical staff member.
