Hope For The People In New Orleans

By Hedrick Lepsch

In a surprising turn of events, the much anticipated and feared Hurricane Isaac turned south towards the Gulf of Mexico recently. The storm was originally anticipated to hit the entire state of Florida, potentially whipping out homes in its vicious path.

Dealing with your plumbing damage wisely will ensure that you are going to be able to minimize the damage that occurs.

The storm reached hurricane intensity on Tuesday, August 28, 2012, while bearing down on Louisiana. Although only a category one storm, it is not done growing yet.

Even the iPhone can't manage the job, despite its military grade glass that protects it from cracking. So what can you do when you find your cell has met an unfortunate fate by falling into a toilet, or going with you into the pool?

The plumbing damage should be dealt with quickly and shutting off the water will ensure that water does not continue to flow into your home. If the water continues to flow into your home, you are going to have water damage to deal with.

People were left homeless on the streets, others were found dead and too many went missing. That being said, officials thing that the city is better prepared to fend off damage this time around, and they have a few good reasons why.

New Orleans sits below sea-level. A massive wall combined with a series of levees and pumps are the only things that keep the ocean from overwhelming the city. During Katrina's time, they had worked just fine the way they were, never having been tested against the strength of Katrina-a category 3. Since there had been no problems with the pumps before, they had no reason to assume that they couldn't do their job now.

When the leak is not coming from the wax seal on the toilet, you will then want to start looking into the tub and the shower area. As you are looking in your bathtub and shower, make sure that you look at the shower-head, spout and handles.

Once they were out of commission, there was nothing to keep the water from consuming the city in front of it. Since that time, professionals have repaired and strengthened the series of levees and pumps to handle the intense pressures of a city under siege.

Use a vacuum hose where appropriate to suck out the moisture, removing the possibility that it will travel to unaffected components. Put it in rice. Putting a bunch of rice in a container and then immersing your cell in that rice overnight will help to draw out the water. If you don't have rice, you can use any other substance that draws moisture from its surroundings.

Getting a professional into your home to deal with your plumbing damage will minimize the effects of the damage. If you do not hire a professional, you may find that you cause more damage as you are working on fixing the plumbing damage.

We may have hoped that New Orleans would be able to escape another disaster for another decade or so. Katrina is so fresh in our minds that our hearts go out to the people there, exclaiming how unfair it is.

We can retain hope in the fact that the city looks in better shape than it ever has been before. With the improvements, lower intensity winds and strengthened wills against the storm, New Orleans still stands a fighting chance against the hurricane damage to come.
