The Benefits of Having a VPS Server over a Dedicated Server

By Joe Maldonado

There are many benefits of having a VPS server over a dedicated server. It used to be that a dedicated server was the only alternative to a shared server. With a dedicated server, the hosting provider needed to purchase and configure new hardware for every customer. This meant that the hosting company had to make a significant investment upfront. There was also a lot of power used, as well as network connections and data center space. This made the cost of dedicated servers sky high.

The whole VPS process just makes everything a lot less expensive. Hosting companies are now able to provide the same quality of service as a dedicated server, only they use shared hardware. This reduces the amount of their data that gets used, as well as how much power and network connections get used. This of course reduces their costs, and they pass the savings on to their customers.

Another thing that makes VPS technology more cost effective is the matter of hardware renewal. In general, with a dedicated server setup, once the server hardware got to be around three years old people would refresh their hardware in an attempt to lower their risk of failure and take advantage of new developments in speed.

You still have to renew your hardware with a VPS server, but this difference lies in who has to pay for it. When you have a dedicated server, you have to take on the full weight of the replacement cost through fee levels, and sometimes you even have to pay another set up fee as well. With VPS, the cost ends up being distributed throughout many customers so that the fees remain low throughout the plans over a span of years even when a hardware replacement is required.

It makes a lot of sense financially and technically to use a virtual private server. Of course, there are still going to be times when a true dedicated server is required, but in most cases virtualization will supply improved performance in comparison to shared servers without having any technical disadvantages.

When you have VPS hosting, you get an exclusive partition within a server. It's basically a self contained server, and within it you will have the ability to run your applications and your personal operating system. You can personalize them according to your own needs and desires. You have the same efficiency that you would get if you had a dedicated server, but you aren't paying as much. However, you have more technical and financial options than you would with a shared server.

Probably the best feature of a virtual private server is the customization. You can run everything as you see fit, and you have complete root access to your partition. You also have the ability to handle the growth of your website. Generally, your website will grow as time goes by. When you use a VPS server, you will have everything you need at your fingertips to handle the growth of your business!
